About HCG and the HCG Diet

The HCG diet has virtually exploded into popularity the past year or so. The HCG diet plan has been around for over 50 years, but despite its effectiveness it remained mostly unknown until brought to light by Kevin Trudeau's book The Weight Loss Cure They Don't Want You to Know About and the power of the internet. The diet is based on original research by British doctor ATW Simeons and his book Pounds and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity.

The diet requires daily doses of HCG, which stands for "human chorionic gonadotropin." It's a hormone found in pregnant women. It unlocks the mother's stored fat and moves it into her blood stream to make sure the growing baby always gets enough fuel. It performs a similar function when used for weight loss. The title of Simeons' book "Pounds and Inches" refers to the way HCG mobilizes your fat and reshapes your body, so you lose both pounds and inches.

People like the HCG diet protocol because it's effective and fast. Most people lose about a pound per day, and the main dieting phase only lasts for six weeks at the most. In between dieting phases, you can eat regularly for several weeks and still maintain your weight thanks to the way HCG heals and resets your hypothalamus gland—the part of your brain that controls your metabolism. This also means that once you've reached your goal weight, you can eat normally and keep the weight off.

There are several different types of HCG on the market, including injections and homeopathic HCG drops. Injections were the original method of taking the hormone, but homeopathic drops have become more popular lately because they are easier to use (no needles!), easier to store (no mixing or refrigeration), and easier to buy (less expensive, no prescription required). They also have no known side effects. HCG is FDA approved for fertility applications so dangers of HCG itself is minimal.

The HCG diet menu consists of 500 calories of specific meats, vegetables, fruits, and a small amount of grains for 3 to 6 weeks. Because HCG starts tapping into stored fat when the body's caloric intake is reduced, a low calorie diet plan is required. But here's another great benefit of HCG—its effect on your hypothalamus also blocks hunger to the point that some people can't even eat all the calories they are allowed. In addition, there is no exercise required. Your body breaks down fat all on its own with the help of HCG.
